  • Musk says he will give one SpaceX share to every US child in 2027, covering roughly 72 million kids under 18.
  • At SpaceX’s closing stock price of $146.03 on Friday, the gift would be worth about $10.5 billion.
  • Musk owns around 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, rising to 6.4 billion with unvested awards and options, a 48.4% beneficial stake.
  • The plan follows a wave of political donations that made Musk the biggest known giver of the 2026 midterm cycle.

Musk said each child in the US would receive a single share. There were 72 million children under 18 in the country as of July 1, 2025, based on census figures. One share each across that group is where the $10.5 billion estimate comes from, using Friday’s close.

A share is a small piece of ownership in a company. If you hold one, you own a sliver of the business and its future value. So a child handed one SpaceX share would become, on paper, a part-owner of the company. The value of that share then moves with the SpaceX stock price, up or down, over the years they hold it.

How the SpaceX shares for US children would reach kids

The mechanism matters here, and it is where a reader should slow down. A gift this size does not drop cash into a piggy bank. It would need a structure that can hold stock for millions of minors at once. That points to the federal child savings program known as Trump Accounts, the vehicle other SpaceX insiders have used for similar gifts.

Trump Accounts give eligible American children tax-advantaged investment accounts, seeded with a one-time government deposit. The accounts lock the money away until the child turns 18. Earlier this year, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell made a Gwynne Shotwell SpaceX donation through the same program, pledging one share each to more than two million children, with a focus on lower-income families in Texas. Musk had stayed quiet on his own plans until now.

Why the timing stands out

SpaceX only recently became a public company, after a record SpaceX IPO that reset Musk’s personal wealth. That listing is what makes a share-based gift possible in the first place. Before the IPO, there was no open market price to value these shares against, and no simple way to pass them to outside accounts.

Now there is a daily SpaceX stock price, which is also why the headline value keeps shifting. The company’s shares have swung sharply since listing, so the real worth of any single gifted share depends entirely on when a child could sell it. A share worth $146 today might be worth more, or less, by the time an 11-year-old reaches adulthood.

Musk’s wealth and the size of the gift

The pledge is large in dollars but small against Musk’s holdings. He controls close to half of SpaceX through his roughly 4.8 billion shares, a figure that climbs to 6.4 billion once unvested awards and stock options are counted. That stake sits at the center of Elon Musk’s net worth calculations, alongside his Tesla holdings.

Giving away 72 million shares would trim that position only slightly. For most families, though, one share is a real starting point. It hands a child an asset they did not have to buy, in a company that draws constant attention.

The political backdrop

Musk’s giving has been in the news lately for a different reason. He has spent more than $276 million on donations to Republican groups since July, making him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterm election. In September, he moved $158 million into the Senate Leadership Fund, the party’s leading Senate super PAC, through an affiliated Texas PAC set up to support Republican Ken Paxton.

Those two contributions, one of $75 million and one of $83 million, rank among the largest political donations on record. The share pledge now sits next to that spending, and it will be read by many through the same political lens.

What parents should watch

If you have children who might qualify, the detail to follow is how the shares are actually transferred and held. Individual company stock inside a government-backed children’s account raises questions that the earlier Shotwell gift already surfaced. The shares may be routed to the Treasury for management rather than handed directly to each child.

Nothing here is guaranteed until the transfer happens. Musk has made the pledge for next year, and the value will track the SpaceX stock price between now and then. For a child who ends up holding one share, the outcome rests on how SpaceX performs over the years they are locked in.
