Deepfake business risks are no longer theoretical; they are here and growing fast with direct financial impact.
Fraudsters are leveraging artificial intelligence to create synthetic voices and fake videos that deceive executives and bypass security. As deepfakes in business expand, the dangers of fraud, impersonation, and identity theft increase, leaving companies exposed.
The ability to fabricate convincing video or audio from limited source material creates a threat that traditional defences cannot easily counter. Once an expensive Hollywood novelty, deepfake technology is now accessible through online software at minimal cost. Banks have lost millions through voice cloning fraud, while corporate leaders find themselves impersonated during video calls authorising wire transfers. From my perspective, this risk has matured faster than most firms were prepared for.
Deepfakes in business highlight the imbalance between offence and defence. Attackers adapt quickly, producing fakes with greater realism. By comparison, detection and removal systems are advancing more slowly, making identification difficult in real time.
One prominent example came from WPP, the world’s largest advertising group. Its CEO, Mark Read, was impersonated through a WhatsApp account and voice cloning during a Microsoft Teams meeting. Attackers attempted to extract money and personal information from executives. Although the attempt failed, it underlined how vulnerable even the largest organisations remain.
Financial services face the heaviest pressure
The financial sector bears the brunt of voice cloning attacks. Voice biometrics, once considered strong protection, now struggle against machine-learned replicas that mimic speech patterns, accents, and vocal quirks. In 2021, Ozy Media collapsed after executives used voice cloning to impersonate a YouTube executive, deceiving Goldman Sachs in a $40 million investment attempt. These cases show that deepfake business risks are not speculative but immediate.
Authentication protocols become the first defence line. Callback verification, secondary confirmation, and in-person validation should be mandatory for transactions involving large sums or sensitive data. Without these steps, companies invite fraud.
Beyond financial crimes, deepfakes in business environments raise broader ethical concerns. Female politicians and executives face non-consensual explicit content, undermining reputations and safety. Penny Mordaunt, a UK Cabinet Minister, spoke out after seeing her face in manipulated pornographic content. The spread of such abuse shows how cyber-attacks linked to deepfakes go far beyond money, extending to personal dignity and democratic trust.
Even schools face risks. A principal in Baltimore was suspended after fake audio recordings portrayed racist and antisemitic remarks, only later exposed as fabricated. Political figures, including Joe Biden, have also been targeted, which demonstrates that reputational attacks through deepfakes destabilise institutions as well as individuals.

Countermeasures through education and AI Detection tools
Technology alone is not enough. Employee awareness and training are central to resisting deepfake business risks. Staff should learn to question unusual requests, especially those involving money or sensitive documents. Unnatural pauses in speech, background noise inconsistencies, or unusual urgency can indicate manipulation.
AI Detection tools offer additional defence. Algorithms trained to spot inconsistencies in lip-sync, image quality, or audio frequencies can support human judgment. Yet these tools remain imperfect. Deepfakes improve daily, while detection and removal systems must catch up. I would argue that firms relying only on software will underestimate the problem.
Mark Read’s warning to WPP staff captures the challenge well: “Just because the account has my photo doesn’t mean it’s me.” This reinforces why multilayered strategies matter.
Building layered corporate protection
From my standpoint, the best approach combines three layers:
- Authentication protocols for critical communication.
- Employee training in fraud awareness and reporting.
- AI Detection tools integrated into communication platforms.
Companies must accept that no single measure is enough. Cyber-attacks using deepfakes demand constant vigilance. As deepfakes in business grow more realistic, defences must be proactive rather than reactive.
